Neocons Target Rand Paul

Rand Paul has a double-digit lead over his primary opponent in the race for the GOP Senate nomination in Kentucky. As the Politico notes, “A win by Paul, a Bowling Green ophthalmologist, would represent the first true electoral success of the tea party movement,” which has adopted Rand as a leader. The neoconservatives who ran the GOP into the ground over the last decade aren’t too happy about what that might mean:

Recognizing the threat, a well-connected former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney convened a conference call last week between Grayson and a group of leading national security conservatives to sound the alarm about Paul.

“On foreign policy, [global war on terror], Gitmo, Afghanistan, Rand Paul is NOT one of us,” Cesar Conda wrote in an e-mail to figures such as Liz Cheney, William Kristol, Robert Kagan, Dan Senor and Marc Thiessen.

Rand Paul certainly isn’t a Kristol, Kagan, or former Bush apparatchik, nor is he an interventionist, though as the Politico notes he disagrees with his father on closing down Guantanamo and a few other issues. That doesn’t reassure the ultrahawks, however, and they’re not the only ones upset:

Paul’s lead has also caught the attention of the pro-Israel community, a group not known for paying close attention to Bluegrass State politics.

“Despite the hard financial times and plenty of incumbents who are asking for help, there is a lot of support for [Republican Senate candidate] Trey Grayson, and it has definitely become a priority,” said one political operative who works on Israel issues.

As I mention below, neoconservatives still set the foreign-policy agenda for the GOP. But they’re genuinely worried that the combination of a grassroots movement and an independently-minded candidate will deliver a blow to their power — especially if Rand Paul becomes only the first of many by showing that there is an alternative to Bushes and Kristols.

About Today's Church Music

Older believers have to be careful how they talk, I'm told. So let me first say, yes, there are some great new songs around. The music and the words both.
Now let me tell you how I really feel...

Since the "established" church seems to have trouble with the old hymnbooks, I sing out of one most every morning. In private. I love even the poetry of these songs. I was raised on them, what can I say? There was majesty and beauty and downright sense to the words.

Take this one. I have never sung it in my life, couldn't whistle the tune if I tried, but while skimming through a particular songbook (Hymns of the Christian Life, 1936! -before even my time) , I have run across this song often. I decided to do a read only. Oh my, I was touched more than I have been in a month of Sundays in the established place. And I mean no offense to my home church. I just have trouble feeling at home during song-time. Check out these words:

1. Jesus and shall it ever be, a mortal man ashamed of Thee?

Ashamed of Thee Whom angels praise, Whose glories shine through endless days?

2. Ashamed of Jesus! sooner far let evening blush to own a star;

He sheds the beams of light divine o'er this benighted soul of mine.

3. Ashamed of Jesus! that dear Friend on Whom my hopes of heaven depend!

No; when I blush, be this my shame, that I no more revere His Name.

4. Ashamed of Jesus! Yes, I may when I've no guilt to wash away,

No tears to wipe, no good to crave, no fears to quell, no soul to save.

5. Till then, nor is my boasting vain, till then I boast a Saviour slain;

And O may this my glory be, that Christ is not ashamed of me.

OH how wonderful those words of Joseph Grigg. I can only imagine that Henry Oliver's tune enhances the beauty. Because that's how the old songs were, for the most part. Great lyrics, supportive music. Not the other way around.

Here's a suggestion for Mother Church, the Body of the Lord Himself. If we so desire novelty for our youth, let's teach them some of these great old songs that they have never heard. To them, they will be new. To us they will be precious. And we'll all be happy.

Suggestion two, while I'm on a roll. The Church was not created for the world, but for the saints. Let the Church remain holy and draw all men to Christ through the preached cross. Let the saints feel comfortable in their own home. The world has its own.

Did I just change the subject...? not really. Music that appeals to the flesh is of the world. Music that effects bodily changes is fleshly. Music that makes me want to cover my ears is an offense. Music that, like alcohol and tobacco, takes some getting used to needs to be eliminated before all ears are polluted and people will not even want to go to a church that does not rock.

The Star Of David - Origins And Meaning

Many conflicting theories exist for what has become the symbol of Judaism around the world.
When I started to research the origin of the Jewish Star or 'Magen David' as it is called in Hebrew (literally 'shield of David'), I realized how many conflicting views there were on its origin and discovered some interesting theories.

The 'David' referred to is believed to be King David, originating from the tribe of Judah, who ruled ancient Israel and was famed for his skills as a warrior and for the biblical episode of 'David and Goliath'.

Many hold the view that the six pointed star originated from the shield of King David, perhaps reminiscent of the shape of the shield or as an emblem upon it. However, historical sources dispute this claim and the star does not appear in any early Jewish literature or artwork. The menorah (candelabra) seems historically to have been more prevalent as a symbol.

There is evidence that what is known today as the Star of David was used in the Middle East and North Africa as a good luck symbol.

If we set aside the origins of the Star of David there is still plenty of intrigue relating to the emblem itself. Theological students have mulled over the symbolism of the two stars and various theories abound as to its meaning.

According to Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), the six points of the star symbolize G-d's rule over the universe in all six directions: north, south, east, west, up and down. In particular, many dwell on the upward and downward directions of the two stars, symbolizing heaven and earth.

It has also been written that the opposition of the two triangles is significant - perhaps representing fire and water or good and bad.

Some consider the fact that the two stars are intertwined may represent the ongoing bond of the Jewish people.

The two stars have a total of twelve sides (inside and out) so this has been equated to the twelve tribes of Israel, which King David unified.

There is some documented usage in Jewish artwork, synagogues, gravestones and religious artifacts but it is not until the 12th century that literary recordings exist. The Star of David was officially adopted by the Zionist movement as their emblem in 1897.

The Jewish star has both happy and sad connotations - it was used to label Jews during the Holocaust, intending to humiliate them. However, in recent times it has become a source of great pride as the accepted symbol of Judaism and as the center piece on the flag of Israel, the Jewish state.

The author of this article researched the origins of the Star of David during the development of a range of Judaic themed home-ware which used the image of the Star of David.

Life Of St Dominic - Part 1

If you read about the history of the Holy Rosary, you'll notice that the most important saint among others who influenced the development and the evolution of the Holy Rosary is St. Dominic of Osma.

We'll cover the most important events in the life of St. Dominic in this article series, that will help us understand and appreciate our faith.

St. Dominic, also known as Dominic of Osma born around 1170 in Caleruega. Caleruega is a small village in Spain near Osma in Castilla la Vieja (in English know as Old Castile. It's a historic region in the center-north of spain). Dominic of Osma was named after a know patron saint of hopeful mothers and astronomers, St. Dominic of Silos.

Some legends tell about St. Dominic's mother visions, such as the dream that she saw before the birth of St. Dominic, she saw a dog jumped out from her body carrying a torch in his mouth. Another famous vision is about a star shining from his chest at his baptism, this is why he is the patron of astronomers.

St. Dominic was born to a religious family, he wasn't the only child who choose priesthood. Two of his brothers were studying priesthood when he born. Later, Dominic entered the university of Palencia (City in the north of Spain).

St. Dominic devoted his first 6 years to the arts and 4 to theology. Arts in Christian faith is known for hundreds of years as we see in the holy land olive wood carvings. This reminds us of the Pope's words "where there is truth, beauty must emerge" Pope Benedict XVI on November 6, 2010)

While Dominic was studying, a famine and starvation his Spain. Dominic was selling his books to feed the poor, and some says that he offered himself as a slave. All this was made to feed the poor! His friends and companions didn't understand how could he do such a thing! how could he sell his precious books! He replied: "Would you have me study off these dead skins, when men are dying of hunger?"

Dominic also spent many years fighting heresies and false teachings, such as the Cathars. It's a sect that among other false teachings they have, they ordained women as well as men.

Next time we will talk about the foundation of the Dominican Order and Dominic's later life.

The Body's Ability to Heal Itself

The truth is the first casualty of war - or to be more precise -
"The first casualty when war comes, is truth," said American
Senator Hiram Johnson in 1917.

I suspect that there are very few people over the age of consent
that do not understand this statement.

War is anathema to the human spirit.

War does not promote healthy growth - unless one is observing the
bottom line of the arms manufacturers spread sheets.

With this in mind - please reflect on the present day health
philosophy.

Disease is a 'something' that attacks us - individually and in
general - to all life forms - be they flora or fauna.

We respond to this attack with our own armaments - be they
chemical, botanical, or whatever...

A war ensues - the good guys vs. the bad guys.

If the conditions are favourable, the good guys win - the baddies
are defeated and we go along merrily until attacked by another
'agent provocateur' of the germ family.

So back to the original quote - truth is hidden/distorted in times
of killing.

In matters of war associated with guns, planes, ships and such - I
have no understanding of what the truth may be - except that I have
a suspicion that greed is at the bottom of the pile.

However, in matters of medicine, the truth is that;

- Germs DO NOT cause disease.

- Germs are the product/result of the environment.

The truth is that;

- Acute diseases are simply an effort by the body to remedy a
process of poisoning or decay that has been left unchecked for too
long a period of time.

The truth is that;

- Chronic disease is a process of hardening/interference that has
gone on for a long time within the organism.

The truth is, that;

- The body - including the body politic - is self healing - that is
its inbuilt mechanism.

May I suggest that if indeed you are 'going to war' - please choose
your ground very wisely - the inexorable law of cause and effect
will be the adjudicator.

The Need For Term Limits in Congress

There is a crisis of epidemic portions in this country, and it continues to attack the American People. This growing epidemic has it ground zero in Washington, DC and it's center of origin is Congress. This epidemic didn't start rapidly and overnight, it has grown slowly and under our very noses. In fact the American People have played a huge part in the growth of this pathogen. We have let greed and ambition run rampant in our nation's capital.

The every American really hasn't taken the time to really look at the individuals in Congress, how long they have been in office and what they have done or not done for this country. The average American has been too busy trying to keep a roof over their head, food on the table and keeping their bills paid. We have been so busy trying to live our lives that we have let Congress and the White House get away with too much.

While generations past put term limits on the Office of the President, they did not have the fore site to do the same for members of Congress. That has unfortunately come back to haunt the current population and will continue to haunt future generations. Congress is no longer in the business of representing the American People, but in the business of greed, politic favor and lining their pockets. Greed and corruption are more common than honor and duty.

There have been members of Congress who have served for more than 50 years. While it is true that the voters put them there, you have to wonder if the American People would have been better served if their term of service had been limited to a total of 2 terms. Perhaps there would have been less partisan and more bipartisan within both the House and Senate.

Special Interest Groups, huge campaign donations, back room deals, congressional hearings that are for show; all speak to Congress being out of control and out of touch. Lawyers make up the majority of Congress, with this type of majority, how can their truly represent the American People. Where are the doctors, business people, farmers and others who could speak for the populace. Why has campaign reform never been fully addressed? Could it be that money talks?

Congressional members receive a salary of between $150,000 to $250,000. That's quite a bit more then the Average American. They also receive a pension for life, even if they serve on a 2 year term. They vote themselves raises, without taxpayer consent. Our founding fathers served in Congress for NOTHING! They also didn't make it a career.

Congressional Leaders will never address this issue, because it's their job and they like the perks that go along with it. It's going to take the American People to voice their objections to this abuse of power. The American People need to vote out every incumbent and make Congress wake up and realize that change will happen.

Both major political parties need to realize that Americans across the country are tired of the lack of leadership that exists. Conservatives, Moderators and Liberals in both parties need a wake up call. Americans want real change, not the blame game that continues to play out in the media. Americans want their jobs back. The ones that Congress allowed to leave for foreign countries. We want our industrial base back. We want our elected representative to do their jobs or get out of the way and let real leaders take a shot at it. The American People are tired of "business as usually" mentality that seems to prevail in Congress and in Washington.

Politics can no longer be for a few. Every American, no matter where they live, need to become involved. We have to stop looking at skin color, religious preference or any other barrier. We need to become involved and informed. We need to be the people that we can be and the leaders that we need to be.

As a working wife and mother, I am quite aware of the difficult times that we live in. With high unemployment, families in this country are finding in difficult to make ends might. Our political leaders in local, state and federal levels are too far removed from the average American to understand our concerns.

Time and time again we voice our opinion and the media ignore us or simple view us as simple minded. We tell our so called legislative representatives what we want or don't want and they either ignore us or bow to special interests.

While, one person can not turn the tide, I do have the Right ad ability to voice a perspective on the current political and social atmosphere in this country.

Independents Acceptance of GOP's Alternate State Of Reality Will Be Mitigated

Independent voters turning against the President and the Democrats after the mostly successful implementation of the policies the President promised and they supported, shows Republican success in creating an alternate state of reality and the Democrats ineptitude in presenting what was done, why it was done, and the role Republicans played in slowing down policies to assist small business in mitigating this Great Recession. It should be noted that this Great Recession is the result of 30 years of supply side economics, a tax policy supporting the transfer of wealth from the middleclass to the top 2%, lack of regulation that enabled the creation of financial instruments that while making many wealthy, almost brought down the world economic system, and the policies that facilitated the outsourcing permanently of American jobs.

Only in an alternate state of reality is a healthcare reform bill in which the deliverer of healthcare is private and the insurance companies paying for healthcare is private can it be called a government takeover. Only in a state of alternate reality can the saving of thousands of manufacturing jobs that ultimately allowed the American auto industry to survive be characterized as a failure. Only in a state of alternate reality is a stimulus that prevented the complete contraction of the US economy be characterized as a failure. Only in an alternate state of reality is the regulation of the financial industry that almost brought down the world economy a bad thing.

For the last 21 months Democrats have been governing as Republicans were posturing. It is impossible to correct 30 years of economic mismanagement in 21 months. The failure of Democrats to inform the American citizens of the relatively long path it will take to get us out of this economic morass because of the structural defect in our economy that can only be mitigated by large investments in our industries is a cause of much of the current angst in the country. As the effect of these investment are realized the semblance of reality promoted by Republicans will cease to have the corrosive effect it currently has on our body politic.

Russia Unleashed - The Bear With Three Ribs

The first beast, the lion with the eagle's wings, is a truly amazing description since the eagle is also the national symbol of the United States. I believe all the animals that describe the four beasts are the national symbols for those countries. If one had to guess what nation the second beast resembled, the bear with the three ribs in its mouth, I have no doubt that since the bear is the national symbol of Russia that very few people would not make this comparison. Let's look again at Daniel's description of the second beast (Daniel 8:5): "And suddenly another beast, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth.

And they said thus to it: 'Arise, devour much flesh!'" If you recall I also proposed that the second beast is the second nation mentioned in Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The second nation was the kingdom of silver that was described as the arms and chest of the statue. If we add all these prophetic imagery together we will end up with the following description of the second beast. Since the second beast is a kingdom of silver I believe the second beast is a strong economic power, not as strong as the United States (the first beast, the kingdom of gold) but still an economic power.

The two arms of the statue that represents the second beast indicate that it is a divided kingdom; the kingdom is made of two strong factions which are vying for control. The description of the bear raised up on one side indicates that one of factions is very much stronger than the other but the other faction, although weaker, still retains some amount of control over the kingdom. I believe the three ribs in the bear's mouth represent three different countries that have been invaded by Russia and their economic resources have been consumed by Russia so that their nations have been devastated. Even so, these "ribs" seem to have enough political power such that the ribs are able to command the bear to go invade and devastate other countries.

Ezekiel's Vision of Gog

"And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:"
(Ezekiel 38:1-5)

While I am not the first, I believe that this passage describes the invasion of Israel in the end times by a nation called Gog and Gog represents the modern day nation of Russia. Many scholars believe that Meschech and Tubal are ancient names for the modern day cities of Moscow and Tobolsk, Russia. I believe the three ribs that tell the Russian bear to eat more meat are the nations of Iran (Persian), Ethiopia and Libya as described in these verses.

"Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.

Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD. And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD. So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel." (Ezekiel 39:1-7)

This passage describes how God will protect Israel and how devastating the destruction that Russia will encounter will be. Russia's weapons will be knocked out of her hands and only 1/6 of Russia's forces will survive this encounter. The "isles" in this passage indicate that Europe is involved in this campaign and God will also punish them for this offensive.
"Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken. And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog. And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.

And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog. And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land. And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD. And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward." (Ezekiel 39:8-22)

It is interesting to note that Israel will burn Russia's weapons for seven years and uses them as an energy supply; I believe this seven year period is the tribulation period. I believe this because the destruction of Russia, as Ezekiel writes about this further on in this chapter, marks the time when all the Jews return to Israel. The destruction of these armies will be an incredible event since it will take Israel 7 months to bury all the bodies.

"And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name; After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid. When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations; Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which cause them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD." (Ezekiel 39:23-29)

As I mentioned above in this passage it is obvious that the destruction of the Russian bear in Israel marks the time when Israel's people that are spread throughout the world will finally return to Israel.

False Arguments Against Capitalism By Emerging Pakistani Peasant Class

Not long ago, I was talking with a young man who had worked his way up from a peasant family in Pakistan to a middle manager sales type person for a Tire Company. Today he has a job in Dubai, and hopes the economy will return. He is educated compared to his peers and we got into a discussion about politics and the so-called evils of capitalism.

Well, as a capitalist and a free man living in the United States, I realized it was indeed time to set the record straight, and I thought this might make an interesting article for those who are wondering why there is so much animosity in the world, or anti-capitalism going on. Let's discuss this shall we?

He stated to me; "I strongly believe in Class Politic meaning that working class are always undermine in capitalism. Did you ever consider that workers have very limited income whereas rich are wealthy that they don't need their wealth eventually. I strongly believe wealthy should be taxed heavily and after all society main pillar is responsibility."

Well, here we have the Islam reference to one of the "pillars" of society, but in this context, this time, he uses it to trash capitalism. I explained to him that he felt it was okay to and he wished the government to; steal the wealth from those who've earned it and give it to those who didn't earn it right? Still, he proclaims it is the working people who are working and the "rich people" that sit around and make all the money. Anyone who has ever run a business knows that's not exactly correct.

Now if there is a lot of corruption, and economic enslavement going on, okay, he has his view of capitalism, but how it's being practiced there is NOT Capitalism as per the reality of economic theory. He obviously, has bought into the whole scheme of socialism, so I asked him this;

Tell me how much money do you have in your pocket right now? Tell me, now put that into an envelope and mail it to Somalia, Ethiopia, or Kenya, they need it more than you do. Do that right now for me, and then tomorrow again, then next week, and then next month, and then in a year let's revisit this topic from your new found experience. Then he stated that; "There should be income equality among workers and owners. People who are rich have more responsibility than poor."

Yes, okay but if that's the case, then they deserve more money for that burden. And if we reduce the pay to pure equality, then no wealthy person or super smart person is going to bother to build companies. There would be no reward for that hard work, thus, no need to work, because poor people could merely get free money from the taxing of the "rich people" until everyone was poor and there was no one left to tax.

All in all we are having a tough time in the world because folks do not understand what Capitalism really is or how it works, rather they are listening to those who espouse socialism, dictatorships, communism, and various hybrids of such telling them and educating them incorrectly. Please consider all this, because it's time we set the record straight on capitalism and why it's so great and also the horrors which accompany those other forms of socio-economic strategy for human society and civilization.

MIXED MARRIAGES IN THE BIBLE

We already covered the mixed marriages of Adam and Eve, Ham and his wife and Abram Ham and Sarah. The list of important personages in mixed marriages continues. Mixed marriage is a pattern with deeper meaning in the Plan of Redemption of God. God is reconciling Black to White, Race to Race and Man to God. There is no desire to homogenize through interracial marriages, but there is a desire to homogenize the view of man about Race to the point that Color is irrelevant. After all, racism is the result of evil and it produces evil.

Moses married a Black Ethiopian named Zipporah. This was a repeat of the marriage of White Adam to Black Eve. This mixed marriage produced Temple officials, including Treasurers. Those offices definitely required exceptional intelligence and morality. As you will recall, Prophetess Miriam began a race riot because of her jealousy of Zipporah (Numbers 12:10). God responded by giving WHITE Leprosy to Miriam as a statement of the racial policy of God. God essentially told Miriam, Since you are so proud of being White, I will make your skin exceedingly white with White Leprosy. What is more, I will segregate you from My people the same way you would segregate Black Zipporah. Both Black and White Racists need to think about this event in the context of the racial policy of God. God, (who was I-Am/Jesus) might have taken personal offence at the racism of Miriam because He (Jesus) would be the product of mixed marriages Himself. Another dimension to this race riot was that Miriam was motivated by job insecurity; she did not want Zipporah to take her job. A prime motive for racism is the struggle for jobs.

Jesus came from a series of mixed marriages and/or couplings. One of those was between Judah and Black Tamar (Genesis 38). Judah was the particular son of Jacob who produced Jewish people. Jesus was a Jew and descendant of Black Tamar. Tamar had twin sons by Judah. One son has been known by the red ribbon that was tied around his wrist at birth. Descendants of Black Tamar migrated northward and settled in the British Isles. These people are recognized by the color red because of the red ribbon of Tamar. Colonial Americans called them Red Coats. They are British. A red t for Tamar is the central design element of the British flag and a red ribbon is tied around the t. As descendants of a Black mother, British people have the Spiritual birthright of Eve. Britain played a critical role in world civilization by spreading both constitutional government and Christianity to every part of the world they colonized. In this way, Britain fulfilled the promise of God to Abraham that his descendants would be a blessing to the world (by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; Genesis 25:3-5).

Key people in the plan of God were in mixed marriages. For example, Judah and Black Tamar produced the tribe that Jesus would eventually be born into. Another mixed marriage that directly relates to Black Americans was the marriage that God arranged between White Joseph and the exceedingly beautiful Black Priestess Aseneth of Egypt. The purpose of this critical marriage was to produce the particular Nation of Priest that is often mentioned in the blessings of God to the descendants of Abram Ham. The United States is that Nation of Priests and national symbols attest to the origin of this nation in Egypt. For example the Great Seal describes the birth of the Tribe of Joseph in Egypt. The religion of this nation is not religion in the strict sense. It is the Gospel of Liberty in Law, which was built into the Constitution and Bill of Rights of the Government of the United States. This revolutionary Gospel converted the whole world to a new way of government whereby common citizens were in control. Democracy is a Spiritual blessing from God through the Black Race and it is a religion that converted and uplifted the world.

What is more, each citizen is a King. And, he is a Priest. Lawfully, a common American citizen is equal to every king and religious leader in the world. For this reason, no American should grovel before a king or religious leader because the American is himself a King and Priest. A groveling gesture could be legally binding in Heaven to where a free American citizen surrenders his or her equal legal status in preference to slavery under a king or religious leader. So, politely refrain from groveling before a king or religious leader so that God does not retaliate against you because you rejected your birthright like Esau did.

NATIONAL SYMBOLS OF THE EGYPTIAN BIRTH OF AMERICA

The Eagle on the Great Seal of America is God, who flew His eaglets out of Egypt when Pharaoh tried to massacre them. This same Eagle led Puritans from Britain and Europe to the wilderness of North America. He led the Church to North America in order for it to give birth to the free Government of the United States. The Government of the United States is the Son of the Church of God, just as Jesus Christ is the Son of the Temple of God.

Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on the wings of an eagle, and brought you unto myself (Exodus 19:4).

To the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place (Revelation 12:14).

The reverse of the Great Seal has the Unfinished Pyramid, which also refers back to Egypt. The American Pyramid is unfinished until Jesus returns as its Capstone from Heaven. America will be complete when her Groom returns to marry her.

Above the Great Eagle is the Pillar of smoke by which God protected His Chosen People, who are the Super Race of Abraham. The very center star within the cluster of stars, which is in the protective cloud, is the Tribe of Manasseh. It was reckoned to be the THIRTEENTH tribe of Israel. Manasseh was the Black son of Joseph and Black Aseneth and recipient of the Second-Born birthright, which is the Spiritual birthright of Eve. Black Manasseh was destined to be the United States of America, a City on a Hill and Beacon of Liberty in a world run by Kings, Caesars, Emperors and Dictators. Government of, by and for the people is the secular religion of Black Manasseh. That is why the Great Seal has the words, New Secular Order. Is the number 13 bad luck? Yes, it is an unlucky number for the enemies of Black Manasseh. But, it is a lucky number for the people of Black Manasseh, who are Americans regardless of Race.

TRANSFER OF RELIGION & GOVERNMENT TO JOSEPH & BLACK ASENETH

God had arranged to legally transfer world government and world religion from Egyptian leaders to Joseph and Black Aseneth. Through a set of miracles, Joseph rose to be King of Egypt while Egypt waited the maturing of a new Pharaoh. At the same time, the Priesthood of Egypt was transferred to the son of Aseneth, Manasseh, because Aseneth was the daughter of Potiphera, Priest from the City of On (Genesis 41:45). By the time Israelites left Egypt, they had legally taken both title of World Ruler and title of World Priest. This transfer of power was symbolically stated when Egyptians gave their gemstones to Israelites. Gemstones were used as legal proof of ownership of birthright inheritance. In other words, Egyptians abdicated their birthrights to Israelites and these birthrights included both governmental and religious authority.

God arranged yet another mixed marriage between Boaz & Black Ruth. Ruth was a Black Moabite whom God blessed to be a mother of Jesus Christ. The lesson to be learned about Ruth was that she clung to God and would not let go no matter what shame and deprivation she suffered. When God designed the Temple, Ruth was represented by one of the two great pillars/columns in front of the Temple of Solomon. The Two Pillars on the Porch of the Temple represented the mixed marriage of White Boaz to Black Ruth. God used Black Ruth in a case of Hybrid Vigor in order to get the perfect genetic makeup for His Son, Jesus Christ. Both King David and Jesus came from Black Ruth. They were examples of genetic engineering in order to produce superior humans. Humble Black Ruth, who was not even an Israelite, was raised up to be one of the two Great Pillars before the Temple of God. Black Americans should think about his when they consider a return to Africa or to a religion from Africa. They should instead proclaim with enthusiasm and pride that they will not be moved from their rightful place as equal citizens of the Great Nation of God, the United States. If you want the Promised Land, then take it like Caleb did. That is certainly what President Obama did.

BLACK SYMBOLS OF AMERICA

We have just covered American symbols that originated in Egypt. It needs to be emphasized that Egypt is a Black nation in the continent that God gave to the descendants of Ham as their inheritance. In other words, the people and Government of the United States were born in the Black continent of Ham and among the Black Race. The people of the United States are children of Ham by the legal adoption of Abram Ham. In addition, people of the United States, whether Black or White, are offspring of mixed marriages arranged by God Himself.

It is no surprise then that national symbols illustrate the mixed bloodline of the American population. The next time you view the Senate and House of Representatives in the news, take note of the columns that your Freemason Forefathers designed in order to state that Americans are a mixed race. In both Houses of Congress, you will see stone columns that are colors of Black and White. They are predominately Black. These columns symbolize the racial mix of Jesus Christ and the Tribe of Manasseh. Note also that these columns ARE the columns of the Temple of God (Solomon). The Ark of the Covenant, on which God sits, is behind these Black and White columns and the Veil (symbolically speaking).

These columns are symbolic statements of governmental and religious authority that began with White Adam, the Architect of world government and Black Eve, the High Priestess of world Religion. This authority was restated down through Bible history with arranged marriages between White government leaders and Black women with Spiritual gifts and authority. All this authority culminated in the creation of the Capitol Building in Washington DC, which is the Temple to which Jesus Christ will return at the Second Coming. Behind the curtain in the Senate is the Ark of the Covenant on which kneel the Two Golden Angels that represent the Two Witnesses. The Two Witnesses are married Americans and the husband is of White ancestry while the wife is of Black ancestry. They are the new Adam and Eve in the New World of God.

In the US Senate, we see the Veil to the Holy of Holies. Inside that Veil is God, Who is sitting on the Ark of the Covenant with the Two Prophets of Revelation 11. On both sides are the Windows of Heaven through which God blesses America (Malachi 3:10).

Let us reconsider the role that a modern day Abram Ham played in the plan of God. President Abraham Lincoln was instrumental in freeing Black Israelites from slavery in the United States. Read my article on the 2500-year blessing of Black Israelites in America and you will see that God used a preordained calendar of events with regard to Black Americans. God purposely raised a man named Abraham to the Presidency in order for the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to be created in the preordained year of 1868. This Amendment gave legal citizenship to Black Israelites.

The name Abraham was not mere coincidence. It was to call the attention of Black Americans to the ancient blessing of God on the children of Abraham. It was the way that God had of saying, I have brought you back to Me as I promised to your father and my friend Abraham. Now, follow me in righteousness so that I will bless you. Indeed, God has begun to bless Black Americans as Black citizens rise to positions of authority in the United States and other Christian nations. Please read my article on the 2500-year Blessing of God On Black Israelites in order to understand why God waited until the predestined year of 2009.

Should Christians Tithe and Honor the Sabbath?

There is a worldwide religious system that has existed from the ancient days of Babel through the Roman Empire that still is with us today in the form of the religio-political system that operates out of Vatican City. At least 20% of mankind is controlled directly by this force, much more indirectly.

It should be obvious to seekers of truth that one cannot stop at Rome when decrying Babylonian ways in today's church and world. Though the Reformation gave birth to a mammoth pull away from Rome, it is obvious that a unity with her was reclaimed through the years and is expressed in many ways through "Protestant" groups today.

I will touch on only a few of the similarities, and, as is my custom, encourage readers to continue the search on their own.

But like it or not, regardless of the name-tag we wear, we are subjected to the traditions of men, and need to keep returning to God's pattern.

Tithing. The tithing tradition is an excellent example of that of which I speak. Neither Jesus or the apostles gave a clear command to first century Christians, Jew or Gentile, about the ten percent payment exacted by God of Jews under the Old Covenant. Yet today, Christian leaders teach tithing to their people as though the New Testament abounded with this concept.

The argument goes something like this: Tithing was in effect long before the law of Moses (valid). Tithing is an "eternal" principle(possibly). So, we too must pay our tithes into the storehouse (using Malachi's terminology). Now, the storehouse is the local church to which you belong. (Sorry, no longer valid, totally indefensible by Scripture)

Monies thus collected then go to pay for an assorted variety of expenses, most of which have to do with local concerns of that fellowship, and most of those concerns center around the building in which the group meets. Justification for this is found in the great amount of material wealth spent on the temple etc.

Oh, we've drifted a long way from the path trod for us by the original church.

1) Cash collected in the early church was given to (a) the man of God who was unable to gain regular employment because of his itinerant ways (although Paul often refused it anyway!), (b) elders worthy of "double honor" because of their extra labors in the church, (c) the needy in their fellowship and other fellowships. The collections were given to apostles to carry to other places. Churches did not consider money their own, and individuals were taught to have this attitude also.

2) No mention of a percentage is given in the New Testament because people in love with Jesus give everything. The concept of tithing is an insult to one whose entire fortune has been given to God's use. The early Christians sold what they absolutely did not need, gave the entire proceeds to the church, and allowed the church to distribute to the needy.

No one was or should be forced into this way of life. Forced sharing is communism. But voluntary sharing, Christianity at its best, there was. And the storehouse? Simply the People of God, whatever their location, whenever a need existed. And the needs had nothing to do with those money draining edifices called "church buildings", since they were not introduced until the days of Constantine.

So why is tithing practically the universal way among us? Slowly the church drifted back to Judaism, encouraged later by a priesthood which also resembled the Jewish way. The first love left, and rules remained. What better rule, thought the church, than God's rule to His Old Covenant people? Oh, it's logical enough. But it is a tradition, nonetheless, with not one ounce of support by apostolic writings!

This is not, in any way, to condemn tithing or tither. Some need to grow enough to give even that much. My point is that Jesus wants it all from His true love slaves, and that, even though the tithe is of Jewish origin, its implementation by the church makes it a Babylonian device. Whenever ritual, rite, or habit, replace the moving of the Holy Ghost, there is religion.Whenever a man feels good because he performed a religious act "for God," he misses out on the greater "feeling" of the acts of grace that his God wishes to put in him. Whenever one ignores the New Testament picture of joyful giving and substitutes joyless paying, he has entered Babylonian ground, has become religious, and is in grave danger.

Advocates of the Old Testament based tithe totally reverse themselves when discussing the Jewish sabbath. Though the Sabbath predates even tithing, it is considered Mosaic and thus not to be observed. Others spiritualize the idea of sabbath by saying we have a "Christian sabbath" (interesting hybrid!), Sunday.

No one can deny it. We do have a day that looks like the sabbath, but is in fact the first day of the week. But, like church buildings, the allEUR'day rest on "Sun" day originated with Constantine, not Jesus. Constantine, Emperor of the Romans in the early fourth century, believed he had been chosen of God to fight the Christian's battles. He brought them out of their prisons, helped put them in church buildings, and, partly to help the slaves of the day, partly to honor the Sun God he worshipped, partly to help the church, he declared the day of the sun as a time of weekly rest.

Now, Scripture indicates that Jesus rose on the first day of the week. Further, it says that certain brothers met on the first day of the week. Then Paul directed one congregation during one crisis situation, to collect an offering on the first day of the week. But Scripture also mentions several 7th day meetings. Also, it declares that the Christians were meeting daily! But gradually the firstEUR'day tradition set in. With Constantine's push, it became not only the meeting day, with its scant Scriptural support, but the rest day, with NO Scriptural support. In later generations of the church it became such a holy day that severe punishments could be had for daring to work on that day. Those calling themselves Christians outdid their Jewish counterparts in the area of day honoring legalism.

As is true with the tithe, so with the sabbath. One who observes comfortably a particular day as holy, then despises all others who do not observe such a day, has religion but not God.One who "observes" Sun day, but lifts not a hand to heaven the rest of the week, is religious but lost.

Kingdom people, the true Body of the Lord Jesus Christ, have entered into a seven day a week Sabbath Rest with the Rest giver, Jesus. Not only so, they desire constant fellowship with God and His people, without which they feel slighted, hungry, cheated.

As I mentioned, the first Christians met daily, were added to daily. Away with the notion that "church" is a once or twice a week event. Away with the Pharisaical pride that boasts in a Sunday night service on the high HOLY day (Constantine's day of the Sun), but can't see its way clear to fellowship the rest of the week!

Yes,my Protestant friends and brothers, Babylon has moved into your midst, too. Any system which promotes partial giving of time or money as a religious habit is Babylonian in nature. Jesus' way is crucifixion. Total abandonment of self, property, and power. To settle for anything less is to be comfortably religious, but not to be gloriously saved.

Egypt needs 'free, democratic' 2011 vote: US senator (Kerry)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Senator John Kerry on Friday urged President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to quiet violent unrest there by promising that September elections will reflect "a free and open democratic process."

"In the final analysis, it is not with rubber bullets and water cannons that order will be restored," said Kerry, a Democratic White House ally who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"President Mubarak has the opportunity to quell the unrest by guaranteeing that a free and open democratic process will be in place when the time comes to choose the country's next leader later this year," he said in a statement.

At least eight people have died in four straight days of protests in Egypt, a major beneficiary of US aid.

Kerry's comments came as Egypt state television showed images of a blaze, apparently set by protesters, consuming the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party in Cairo.

HAWAII: Senate Approves Civil Unions

The Hawaii Senate has just approved its civil unions bill!

The Senate voted 19-6 for the bill Friday, sending it to the state House of Representatives for additional consideration. Hawaii would become the sixth state to grant some of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. A civil unions bill also passed the Illinois Legislature last month. Democrats, who control the Hawaii Legislature, have said they plan to approve the bill quickly this year and send it to new Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his signature. Abercrombie has said he supports civil unions.

33 Ex-Mayors Accused of Corruption in Mexico

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) — More than 30 former mayors in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz have been ordered arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Veracruz Deputy Attorney General Reynaldo Escobar says they are among 115 ex-municipal employees in the state charged with corruption between 2004 and 2008. He says the total amount suspected embezzled is 67 million pesos ($5.5 million).

The first to be arrested Friday was Leonardo Mendoza, former mayor of the town of Benito Juarez.

Escobar says Mendoza and his former treasurer are suspected of embezzling nearly 4 million pesos from federal and state resources meant for public works. He says prosecutors have evidence of expenditures that were not accounted for and overpaying in some projects.

* Allegations Deutsche Bank filed false documents

* Inquiry could affect foreclosures across United States

* Testimony demanded from Deutsche Bank officials

By Scot J. Paltrow

NEW YORK, Jan 28 (Reuters) - A branch of the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) filed false documents and attempted to mislead a bankruptcy judge in a foreclosure action.

Although the investigation involves the case of only one homeowner in Connecticut, a court document filed on Jan. 26 by the United States Trustee's Office said it wants to elicit information about Deutsche Bank's practices in general in foreclosure cases.

The inquiry involves Deutsche Bank National Trust Co, the Deutsche Bank unit that acts as trustee for thousands of trusts that invested in mortgage-backed securities. The U.S. Trustees' Office is a division of the Department of Justice responsible for overseeing administration of bankruptcy cases.

Bristol Palin's Abstinence Talk at Washington University Panel Cancelled after Student Outcry

Bristol Palin's scheduled appearance on a Washington University panel has been canceled, according to the University, after outrage over the appearance prompted protests from students.

Palin, the daughter of 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, was scheduled to speak on a February panel about abstinence as part of the university's Sexual Responsibility Week. The 20-year-old single mother is an ambassador to the Candie's Foundation, which encourages abstinence among teenagers.

Many students at the university's St. Louis campus protested Palin's planned visit, prompting the issue to be taken up at a student Senate meeting this week.

Among the students' objections to the visit was the matter of Palin's pricetag: According to the St. Louis Today, the Student Union Treasury at Washington University approved a $20,000 budget for the event. The student government did not disclose Palin's exact fee for the appearance. She has been known to charge anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 per occasion.

"It's not necessarily in opposition to the ideas that are being presented," said Philip Thomas, a Washington University student who started an online petition protesting Palin's appearance, in an interview with the St. Louis Today. "People are getting so angry because of the opposition to Palin's lack of expertise and the high cost she is charging." He said the outrage over the fee was driven in part by anger over recent budget cuts that have affected other student activities.

The Neocons are not Conservatives

at least not in the traditional sense or one that most Americans would recognize. Moreover, calling people like Tom Delay, "W' and their fellow Republicans, "conservatives" is not only a misnomer, it is paying them an undeserved compliment. As a former, generally conservative Republican, I can tell you that there has been a radical change in the dominant credo of the Republican party --- a change that has taken the party far, far to the right of mainstream conservatism.

To paraphrase the much beloved and sorely missed Barry Goldwater: "The Republican party has been taken over by a bunch of kooks, who have nearly ruined it". (He was being too kind. These kooks have ruined the Republican Party and they are in the process of ruining the nation... which is why I became a Democrat.) More Goldwater: "Every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass, I get damn tired of those political preachers telling me what to believe in and do." (For those of you who don't know much about Barry, he was pro-choice and in favor of gay rights --- and a talked a little too bellicosely for his own good --- and perhaps the nation's.)

No less a person than Bob Dole has also said: "Barry and I, we've sort of become the liberals." Goldwater: "Can you imagine that?".

These comments put a mild face on an earth shattering change. The Republican party has left traditional, intellectual, nationalist conservatism behind in favor of something vasty different, and much scarier.

To those who haven't followed closely, I will describe just a few of the watershed changes.

Free market theories (good or bad) are being supplanted by corporate welfare, hidden protectionism, crony capitalism and other policies that effectively decrease the chance that smaller businesses have to compete with the big boys. Fiscal responsibility has been replaced with "borrow and spend", unbounded payback to cronies and core, and out of control spending. The "strong" dollar has been replaced by the "rundown" dollar and interest rates kept at artificial lows. Nationalism has been replaced by multinational corporatism, where "offshoring" (as opposed to selling offshore from the US) is accepted as smart business practice, and anybody is welcome at the "bar" as long as they "pay". Containment and a responsible foreign policy, stressing building and maintaining alliances, is replaced by some crackpot theory that resembles nothing so much as a drunk swinging blindly at friends and foes alike. Respect and support for the military has been replaced with neglect, contempt and totally inept micromanagement. Government reaches every day further and further into peoples lives and the into prerogatives of states.

I could go on, but you get the point. So don't call these guys conservatives. Call them corporatists; call them reactionaries; call them extremists; call them radicals; call them neocons (emphasizing the CON), but don't call them conservatives. They are not and you are insulting a lot of true conservatives (whatever you may feel about them, many were and are real patriots) by doing so.

We miss you Barry. I am not a conservative any more, but we need a few honest ones like you to speak out.

Famous Filibusters in Political History

The filibuster as a political delaying tactic has been a part of the American political process since the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Though it was not used in the early years of the nation, the filibuster has been used hundreds of times since the 1840's. Here are a few of the famous filibusters from our political history.

The U.S. Constitution does not limit the length or nature of debate on the floors of the Senate or the House of Representatives. The House has since adopted rules which limit the length of debate since the House has a very large number of Representatives. But the smaller Senate has always upheld the right of a recognized Senator to debate an issue for as long as he or she wishes to hold the floor. Senate Rule 19 and Rule 22, the cloture rule adopted in 1917, create some guidelines for conducting a debate and for closing the debate when it becomes lengthy.

Senator Henry Clay

In 1841 Senator Henry Clay proposed a bank bill that was opposed by Senator John C. Calhoun who began a lengthy, seemingly unending, rebuttal. Calhoun basically created the modern filibuster. Clay threatened to change the Senate rules in order to close debate on the issue. Clay's colleague, Thomas Hart Benton, rebuked Clay and accused him of trying to stifle the Senate's right to unlimited debate.

Through the next few turbulent decades and into the 1960's the filibuster was used often by Southern Democrats to block civil rights legislation. The filibuster had been seen by the minority party as a tool to combat the potential "tyranny of the majority," but the frequent usage of the filibuster by the Southern Democrats became characterized as the "tyranny of the minority."

Senate Rule 22

President Woodrow Wilson suggested that some limits be placed on the unlimited debate concept. In 1917 the Senate adopted Senate Rule 22, now known as the "cloture" rule. The new Rule 22 provided the mechanism to close out debate on a legislative bill and bring the bill up for a vote if cloture was approved by 67% of the Senate. The 67% requirement remained in effect until 1975 when Rule 22 was amended to allow a 60% agreement to invoke cloture.

Cloture Rule 22 was tested in 1919 when the Senate was asked to ratify the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. The treaty was debated and filibustered, but a 67% majority voted to end the filibuster and to bring the treaty to a vote.

Senator Huey Long

Senator Huey Long, the fiery and colorful senator from Louisiana, made the filibuster famous between 1932 and 1935 when he utilized it several times to stall legislation that he considered unfair to the poor. Long frustrated his opponents and entertained the Senate gallery by reading Shakespeare, reciting shrimp and oyster recipes and talking about "pot-likkers." An amendment to Senate Rule 19 later required that debate on legislation be germane to the issue being debated.

On June 12, 1935, Senator Long engaged in his most famous filibuster. A bill was before the Senate to eliminate the provision for the Senate to confirm senior National Recovery Act employees. Senator Long opposed the bill because he didn't want his political adversaries in Louisiana to obtain lucrative N.R.A. jobs. Senator Long spoke for 15 hours and 30 minutes running well into the evening and early morning hours with senators dozing at their desks. Long read and analyzed each section of the Constitution, a document which he claimed had become "ancient and forgotten lore" under President Roosevelt's New Deal.

After the reading of the Constitution Senator Long offered to give advice to the remaining senators on any subject of their choosing. No senator took Long up on his offer but the gallery patrons began sending notes to the floor for Senator Long to extemporize on. That kept Long going into the early hours of the morning. At 4 a.m. Long yielded the floor in order to use the restroom and his proposal was defeated.

James Stewart brought more fame to the filibuster when he played the role of Senator Jefferson Smith in the 1939 film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." Stewart's character launched into a filibuster in response to an attempt to ridicule him.

Senator Wayne Morse

Senator Wayne Morse from Oregon was called "The Tiger of the Senate" and served in the Senate under 5 Presidents. In 1952 Senator Morse left the Republican Party, claiming independent status, when he objected to sections of the party platform and Dwight Eisenhower's choice of Richard Nixon as his vice presidential running mate. Senator Morse claimed that the Republican Party had left him.

On April 24, 1953, Senator Morse began to filibuster against Tidelands Oil legislation. He kept the floor for 22 hours and 26 minutes, breaking the filibuster record of 18 hours held by his mentor, Wisconsin Senator Robert La Follette.

Senator Morse is remembered through numerous colorful stories. For example, Clare Booth Luce, former U.S. Senator and Ambassador to Italy had to resign her appointment when she made the insulting but funny remark that her problems with Senator Morse began when he was kicked in the head by a horse.

Senator Strom Thurmond

About 9 p.m. on August 28, 1957, Senator Strom Thurmond rose before the Senate and announced, "Mr. President, I rise to speak against the so-called voting rights bill, H.R. 6127." His own staff had not been informed about Senator Thurmond's intentions to filibuster the bill, but they knew something was up when they saw Thurmond gathering considerable reading material.

Senator Thurmond had prepared himself for a long filibuster on the Senate floor. Earlier in the day he had spent time in the Senate steam room, dehydrating himself so that he would absorb all the water he drank without having to visit the restroom. His wife packed a steak sandwich lunch for him and she stayed in the family gallery throughout the night. Thurmond brought a quantity of malted milk tablets and throat lozenges from his office.

Senator Thurmond began his filibuster by reading each state's election statutes. He later read and discussed an opinion by Chief Justice Taft. He also read and discussed the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and Washington's Farewell Address. His staff, concerned for Senator Thurmond's health, was finally successful in getting him to leave the floor.

After 24 hours and 18 minutes, a record that still stands, Senator Thurmond concluded his remarks with, "I expect to vote against the bill." The bill was defeated.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964

On June 10, 1964, Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia finished his address begun on the previous day, slightly more than 14 hours earlier. He filibustered against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, an act which was debated by Byrd and others for 57 working days, including 6 Saturdays.

Senate President Hubert Humphrey from Minnesota needed 67 votes to be able to carry the motion for cloture. Minority Leader Senator Everett Dirksen, the always eloquent senator from Illinois procured the Republican votes necessary to pass the cloture motion. "Stronger than all the armies is an idea whose time has come," he said. "The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing in government, in education, and in employment. It will not be stayed or denied. It is here!"

The final roll call vote on cloture resulted in 71 votes in favor and 29 votes opposed. It was the first time in history that cloture had been invoked on civil rights legislation. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was the most sweeping of its kind in our history.

Justice Abe Fortas

In June of 1968 Chief Justice Earl Warren notified President Lyndon Johnson that he would be retiring from the Supreme Court. This move gave President Johnson time to nominate a successor since he was not planning to seek re-election as President. Johnson nominated Associate Justice Abe Fortas to replace Warren. At the same time Johnson nominated Texas Appeals Court Justice Homer Thornberry to replace Fortas, a move that was designed to satisfy southern senators.

President Johnson counted on Senators Everett Dirksen and Richard Russell for their support of the nomination. When Abe Fortas testified at his own confirmation hearing, an unprecedented occurrence, it was revealed that Fortas worked uncomfortably closely with the White House staff and the President. Later it was learned that Fortas was being paid a large sum, privately, to teach an American University summer course. At this point Dirksen, Russell, and other senators withdrew their support.

Though the committee recommended confirmation of Justice Abe Fortas, a filibuster ensued on the Senate floor to block his confirmation, the first filibuster in Senate history on a Supreme Court nomination. On October 1, 1968, the Senate was unable to tally the 67 votes needed to invoke cloture and President Johnson withdrew the nomination.

The use of the filibuster has increased from 16 filibusters in the 19th century to 66 in the first half of the 20th century to 195 in the period from 1970 to 1995. It is likely that the filibuster will continue to play an important role in the American political process.

Politics For Beginners

I am amazed by some of the people whom I encounter every day who do not know anything about politics. Everyone should know how their government works so I am writing down my old college notes as a beginner's guide. As it's the credit crunch some of you will feel too busy and confused by the political situation and the criticism of the government on financial and borrowing matters. This is why everyone should take a little time to understand government rolls and why they affect everything from your home insurance to your grocery bill.

The United Kingdom is run with a democratic government. The House of Commons and The House of Lords hold the government in check although the House of Commons is the more powerful of the two houses.

We live under 'Prime Ministerial' rule - this means the rule of one person.
The powers that the P.M has depends on five key factors.

- The personality of the P.M
- Majority that the P.M has in the House of Commons
- The success of the P.M's policies
- The unity of the P.M's party
- The effectiveness of the Opposition party

Unlike in America where there is a deputy president, in the UK there is constitutionally no such role as a deputy Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister is the leader of the House of Commons. He appoints and dismisses members of the government. He is also the Chairman of the Cabinet. The Prime Minister has his own offices and advisors and is the most important representative of the Government. The P.M holds wide powers of patronage and also chooses the date of the general election.

Now for a bit of economics. There is no excuse not to pay attention to this part if news coverage of the credit crunch has left you baffled. Economics basically means the study of using scarce resources as efficiently as possible so that society's unlimited demands for goods and services can be met.

The term that we so often hear in the news 'the public sector' refers to the sector run by the state like Government departments, Local Government and Nationalised Industries. The main role of the public sector is to provide efficient and adequate services.

The term 'the Private Sector' refers to organisations that are privately owned such as companies, clubs, partnerships etc. The main role of the private sector is to maximise profits.

Recession is a state of affairs that indicate a down turn in the business cycle. Output and investment has dropped, demand has dropped and unemployment has risen. This can be caused by a number of factors i.e. external factors such as a world oil crisis.

Reflation is a policy to combat recession. The policy may include reducing interest rates, reducing taxes, increasing public spending and devaluing the currency.

A Stricken Empire - The Shadow of Our Hegemony

The shadow of our hegemony, having been cast over the earth for the past two centuries, is growing thin and its pulse weakening. With its days seemingly numbered, the American empire - this great experiment in freedom and prosperity - is apparently approaching its end. Early indications of this momentous event were foreshadowed in the hard fall of its financial markets and the idling of its economic engines. The road to infinite progress and universal prosperity seems to be nearing a dead end.

Obama's selection signaled the rising of the curtain for a final act, as the charismatic empire builder struts onstage and promises a new beginning orchestrated around an ever-expanding Federal mandate, with America again "ready to lead the world." Even the least perceptive among us could read the signs of America's weariness and the ceaselessly looming archetypal battle between the forces of imperial expansion, those of contraction, and alternatively, those instigating for something whispered only softly - its disintegration.

The signs of such an occasion are the palpable, almost visceral reactions of individual States recoiling from the growing burden of this ever-expanding Federal hegemony. Perhaps they - the governors - also saw the insidiousness of this encroaching empire, relentlessly clawing its way forward, as clearly as others around the globe have seen us for more than a century.

The evidence is clear and unmistakable: a renewed defense of the 10th amendment - safeguarding States rights, a blatant refusal of Federal stimulus funds, and stirrings of secession from the Union by several State executives, coupled with the self-destructiveness of the Republican Party and the splintering strife haunting the party currently in power. And all of this in apparent response to the Obama administration's inclination to curtail the 2nd amendment's right to bear arms, federalize the health insurance industry, nationalize commercial enterprises, loan money to the States, tax energy consumption, as well as continue to expand our financial and military investments globally. Well, you get the picture! More big government! More imperial control! More power! As Obama so eloquently tipped his own hand just this month in Russia, "The pursuit of power is no longer a zero-sum game..." a rather bald admission that the true mission of his (and perhaps all) political leadership is the management of power domestically and its expansion globally.

So what is happening here? Well, the socialists, libertarians and communists, etc., all smell blood in the water. Yet the larger body politic - the 'proletariat or 'petite bourgeoisie' (depending upon your perspective) - is not so quick to jump on any of these tired old bandwagons. In fact, many of those among the masses are beginning to explore alternative solutions to questions about the direction and velocity of change necessary to avert the direst of outcomes. These are voices crying for a retreat or even a termination of the executioner... death to the State, (Federal or otherwise) and its alien authority.

These calls come from the would-be anarchists of today... not because they want chaos to reign; rather, because they feel the archaic pull of a more primal autonomy or self-sufficiency, some memory trace that was lost with the establishment of kingdoms, nations, empires, legislators, and other anonymous, impersonal governing bodies.

Yes, a revolution is coming. But it will not be a soft revolution or one of unification; rather, it will be one of disintegration. And while the secessionist movements may have gained serious momentum with certain non-Republican elements under the 'second coming' of George Bush, this revolution of disintegration will not be led by liberals or progressives, but rather by conservatives and independents - those who prefer limited Federal authority and limited government in general. And when the divisions begin, with a few States attempting secession from the Union, these new anarchists will begin to make their own moves, taking advantage of the vulnerability of both the Union and the States.

As heir-apparent of Western civilized progress, with ever-widening circles of social and economic complexity - a 'beacon of hope and freedom' to the rest of humanity, the American experience is now a fitting body-politic for a complete reversal of course - the rejection of hierarchy, control and the complexity of the civilized state. It appears more and more to be the unlikely locus for a recovery of the primal, the instinctual, the natural. Our America is a land ripe for cultural, economic and political disintegration in the interests of recovering a lost simplicity. All hinges upon the nature and dynamics of the revolutionary spirit, and to what extent it can overcome the inertia of the standing cultural hegemonic forces.

Will the coming end of the American empire abandon us to a retreat into a world populated by the likes of 'Mad Max' - a modern day Leviathan, or will it be the highly anticipated coming of the 'Kingdom of God' on earth? Neither I think! If revolutionary forces succeed in mobilizing this passion for disintegration, and if such passion can fuel the anarchist's vision for community without authority, without a ruler or government, then perhaps we can dismantle this hegemony and establish a new form of kinship-based community with a natural respect for autonomy and appreciation of self-sufficiency. We can only hope!

The Role of Media in Politics

What role does the powerful new media play in Politics? The short and long term effects cannot be denied. But does the new media offer us sound political information or simply entertain us for profit and ratings?

The New Media

Every so often, the mass media system in the United States experiments significant transformations that signal a new plateau in its evolution. Widespread recognition of the new media's role on the political scene occurred during the 1992 Presidential campaign. The candidates flocked to talk radio, television talk shows, news magazine programs and the internet. Although the media offered many options to deliver their views, the debate as to rather or not the content was informative or entertainment had begun.

Talk Radio

If there has been one communications format that has become emblematic of the new media, it is talk radio. Talk radio used to be the "night shift" of the airways. Talk radio reinvented itself. Talk radio became an important candidate forum in 1992. President George H. Bush interviewed with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh. By 1994 nine talk radio hosts ran for statewide or local office. Most were unsuccessful, but their positions in talk radio gave them legitimacy as
candidates.

Other unsuccessful candidates such as former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and New York Mayor Ed Koch moved into local or national talk show host jobs. Talk radio had a political platform. Americans were tuning in. Ratings were up. Profits were rising. Talk radio had become a force to be reckoned with.

Television

Cable television opened the airways for an onset of media opportunities. Time slots were filled with talk shows and news programs that you could tune in twenty four hours a day. The television media quickly enhanced their position in the political process. Politicians and the mainstream press could not help but take them seriously. One of the criticisms levied against the television media was that they trivialized serious issues of governing by mixing politics with entertainment. Every political issue at hand could now be analyzed and scrutinized twenty four hours a day on cable news. Campaigns had to give a second look on the role of media in politics. The media could be a tool of support or a thorn in your side. Campaign strategy had to be changed. The power of television was not to be denied.

The Internet

Twenty five years ago the term "modem" did not even appear in the dictionary. Modems connect people to online computer services such as CompuServe,Prodigy, America Online or MSN, and to hundreds of thousands of world wide websites and home pages. Increasingly, the internet has become a tool for political communications as well. On the net you could gain political info, express political opinion, and mobilize other voters and political leaders. You could also make political donations. In this years Presidential race, candidates have raised literally millions of dollars online. The web has become a electronic town hall. In a brief time, the web has grown into a major player in the new media.

Conclusion

The media has found its niche in today's politics. Rather its talk shows, television or the internet, they have laid a foundation, built a platform from which to voice their social agenda and flex their political muscle. How much of that voice is quality content is still up for debate. One thing is for sure, if you want to succeed in politics, it will not hurt to have the media in your corner.

American History - The Colonial Period

The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with The Colonial Period.

The Colonial Period

NEW PEOPLES

Most settlers who came to America in the 17th century were English, but there were also Dutch, Swedes and Germans in the middle region, a few French Huguenots in South Carolina and elsewhere, slaves from Africa, primarily in the South, and a scattering of Spaniards, Italians and Portuguese throughout the colonies.

After 1680 England ceased to be the chief source of immigration. Thousands of refugees fled continental Europe to escape the path of war. Many left their homelands to avoid the poverty induced by government oppression and absentee-landlordism.

By 1690 the American population had risen to a quarter of a million. From then on, it doubled every 25 years until, in 1775, it numbered more than 2.5 million.

Although a family could move from Massachusetts to Virginia or from South Carolina to Pennsylvania, without major readjustment, distinctions between individual colonies were marked. They were even more so between the three regional groupings of colonies

NEW ENGLAND

New England in the northeast has generally thin, stony soil, relatively little level land, and long winters, making it difficult to make a living from farming. Turning to other pursuits, the New Englanders harnessed water power and established grain mills and sawmills. Good stands of timber encouraged shipbuilding. Excellent harbors promoted trade, and the sea became a source of great wealth. In Massachusetts, the cod industry alone quickly furnished a basis for prosperity.

With the bulk of the early settlers living in villages and towns around the harbors, many New Englanders carried on some kind of trade or business. Common pasture land and woodlots served the needs of townspeople, who worked small farms nearby. Compactness made possible the village school, the village church and the village or town hall, where citizens met to discuss matters of common interest.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony continued to expand its commerce. From the middle of the 17th century onward it grew prosperous, and Boston became one of America's greatest ports.

Oak timber for ships' hulls, tall pines for spars and masts, and pitch for the seams of ships came from the Northeastern forests. Building their own vessels and sailing them to ports all over the world, the ship masters of Massachusetts Bay laid the foundation for a trade that was to grow steadily in importance. By the end of the colonial period, one-third of all vessels under the British flag were built in New England. Fish, ship's stores and wooden ware swelled the exports.

New England shippers soon discovered, too, that rum and slaves were profitable commodities. One of the most enterprising -- if unsavory -- trading practices of the time was the so-called "triangular trade." Merchants and shippers would purchase slaves off the coast of Africa for New England rum, then sell the slaves in the West Indies where they would buy molasses to bring home for sale to the local rum producers.

THE MIDDLE COLONIES

Society in the middle colonies was far more varied, cosmopolitan and tolerant than in New England. In many ways, Pennsylvania and Delaware owed their initial success to William Penn.

Under his guidance, Pennsylvania functioned smoothly and grew rapidly. By 1685 its population was almost 9,000. The heart of the colony was Philadelphia, a city soon to be known for its broad, tree-shaded streets, substantial brick and stone houses, and busy docks. By the end of the colonial period, nearly a century later, 30,000 people lived there, representing many languages, creeds and trades. Their talent for successful business enterprise made the city one of the thriving centers of colonial America.

Though the Quakers dominated in Philadelphia, elsewhere in Pennsylvania others were well represented. Germans became the colony's most skillful farmers. Important, too, were cottage industries such as weaving, shoe making, cabinetmaking and other crafts.

Pennsylvania was also the principal gateway into the New World for the Scots-Irish, who moved into the colony in the early 18th century. "Bold and indigent strangers," as one Pennsylvania official called them, they hated the English and were suspicious of all government. The Scots-Irish tended to settle in the back country, where they cleared land and lived by hunting and subsistence farming.

As mixed as the people were in Pennsylvania, New York best illustrated the polyglot nature of America. By 1646 the population along the Hudson River included Dutch, French, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, English, Scots, Irish, Germans, Poles, Bohemians, Portuguese and Italians -- the forerunners of millions to come.

The Dutch continued to exercise an important social and economic influence on the New York region long after the fall of New Netherlands and their integration into the British colonial system. Their sharp-stepped, gable roofs became a permanent part of the city's architecture, and their merchants gave Manhattan much of its original bustling, commercial atmosphere.

THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

In contrast to New England and the middle colonies were the predominantly rural southern settlements: Virginia, Maryland, North and South Carolina, and Georgia.

By the late 17th century, Virginia's and Maryland's economic and social structure rested on the great planters and the yeoman farmers. The planters of the tidewater region, supported by slave labor, held most of the political power and the best land. They built great houses, adopted an aristocratic way of life and kept in touch as best they could with the world of culture overseas.

At the same time, yeoman farmers, who worked smaller tracts of land, sat in popular assemblies and found their way into political office. Their outspoken independence was a constant warning to the oligarchy of planters not to encroach too far upon the rights of free men.

Charleston, South Carolina, became the leading port and trading center of the South. There the settlers quickly learned to combine agriculture and commerce, and the marketplace became a major source of prosperity. Dense forests also brought revenue: lumber, tar and resin from the long leaf pine provided some of the best shipbuilding materials in the world. Not bound to a single crop as was Virginia, North and South Carolina also produced and exported rice and indigo, a blue dye obtained from native plants, which was used in coloring fabric. By 1750 more than 100,000 people lived in the two colonies of North and South Carolina.

In the southern-most colonies, as everywhere else, population growth in the back country had special significance. German immigrants and Scots-Irish, unwilling to live in the original tidewater settlements where English influence was strong, pushed inland. Those who could not secure fertile land along the coast, or who had exhausted the lands they held, found the hills farther west a bountiful refuge. Although their hardships were enormous, restless settlers kept coming, and by the 1730s they were pouring into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Soon the interior was dotted with farms.

Living on the edge of the Indian country, frontier families built cabins, cleared tracts in the wilderness and cultivated maize and wheat. The men wore leather made from the skin of deer or sheep, known as buckskin; the women wore garments of cloth they spun at home. Their food consisted of venison, wild turkey and fish. They had their own amusements -- great barbecues, dances, housewarmings for newly married couples, shooting matches and contests for making quilted blankets. Quilts remain an American tradition today.

SOCIETY, SCHOOLS AND CULTURE

A significant factor deterring the emergence of a powerful aristocratic or gentry class in the colonies was the fact that anyone in an established colony could choose to find a new home on the frontier. Thus, time after time, dominant tidewater figures were obliged, by the threat of a mass exodus to the frontier, to liberalize political policies, land-grant requirements and religious practices. This movement into the foothills was of tremendous import for the future of America.

Of equal significance for the future were the foundations of American education and culture established during the colonial period. Harvard College was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Near the end of the century, the College of William and Mary was established in Virginia. A few years later, the Collegiate School of Connecticut, later to become Yale College, was chartered. But even more noteworthy was the growth of a school system maintained by governmental authority. The Puritan emphasis on reading directly from the Scriptures underscored the importance of literacy.

In 1647 the Massachusetts Bay Colony enacted the "ye olde deluder Satan" Act, requiring every town having more than 50 families to establish a grammar school (a Latin school to prepare students for college). Shortly thereafter, all the other New England colonies, except Rhode Island, followed its example.

The first immigrants in New England brought their own little libraries and continued to import books from London. And as early as the 1680s, Boston booksellers were doing a thriving business in works of classical literature, history, politics, philosophy, science, theology and belles-letters. In 1639 the first printing press in the English colonies and the second in North America was installed at Harvard College.

The first school in Pennsylvania was begun in 1683. It taught reading, writing and keeping of accounts. Thereafter, in some fashion, every Quaker community provided for the elementary teaching of its children. More advanced training -- in classical languages, history and literature -- was offered at the Friends Public School, which still operates in Philadelphia as the William Penn Charter School. The school was free to the poor, but parents who could were required to pay tuition.

In Philadelphia, numerous private schools with no religious affiliation taught languages, mathematics and natural science; there were also night schools for adults. Women were not entirely overlooked, but their educational opportunities were limited to training in activities that could be conducted in the home. Private teachers instructed the daughters of prosperous Philadelphians in French, music, dancing, painting, singing, grammar and sometimes even bookkeeping.

In the 18th century, the intellectual and cultural development of Pennsylvania reflected, in large measure, the vigorous personalities of two men: James Logan and Benjamin Franklin. Logan was secretary of the colony, and it was in his fine library that young Franklin found the latest scientific works. In 1745 Logan erected a building for his collection and bequeathed both building and books to the city.

Franklin contributed even more to the intellectual activity of Philadelphia. He formed a debating club that became the embryo of the American Philosophical Society. His endeavors also led to the founding of a public academy that later developed into the University of Pennsylvania. He was a prime mover in the establishment of a subscription library, which he called "the mother of all North American subscription libraries."

In the Southern colonies, wealthy planters and merchants imported private tutors from Ireland or Scotland to teach their children. Others sent their children to school in England. Having these other opportunities, the upper classes in the Tidewater were not interested in supporting public education. In addition, the diffusion of farms and plantations made the formation of community schools difficult. There were a few endowed free schools in Virginia; the Syms School was founded in 1647 and the Eaton School emerged in 1659.

The desire for learning did not stop at the borders of established communities, however. On the frontier, the Scots-Irish, though living in primitive cabins, were firm devotees of scholarship, and they made great efforts to attract learned ministers to their settlements.

Literary production in the colonies was largely confined to New England. Here attention concentrated on religious subjects. Sermons were the most common products of the press. A famous Puritan minister, the Reverend Cotton Mather, wrote some 400 works. His masterpiece, Magnalia Christi Americana, presented the pageant of New England's history. But the most popular single work of the day was the Reverend Michael Wigglesworth's long poem, "The Day of Doom," which described the last judgment in terrifying terms.

In 1704 Cambridge, Massachusetts, launched the colonies' first successful newspaper. By 1745 there were 22 newspapers being published throughout the colonies.

How can you put a limit on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom that changes everything.

In New York, an important step in establishing the principle of freedom of the press took place with the case of Johann Peter Zenger, whose New York Weekly Journal begun in 1733, represented the opposition to the government. After two years of publication, the colonial governor could no longer tolerate Zenger's satirical barbs, and had him thrown into prison on a charge of seditious libel. Zenger continued to edit his paper from jail during his nine-month trial, which excited intense interest throughout the colonies. Andrew Hamilton, the prominent lawyer who defended Zenger, argued that the charges printed by Zenger were true and hence not libelous. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and Zenger went free.

The prosperity of the towns, which prompted fears that the devil was luring society into pursuit of worldly gain, produced a religious reaction in the 1730s that came to be known as the Great Awakening. Its inspiration came from two sources: George Whitefield, a Wesleyan revivalist who arrived from England in 1739, and Jonathan Edwards, who originally served in the Congregational Church in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Whitefield began a religious revival in Philadelphia and then moved on to New England. He enthralled audiences of up to 20,000 people at a time with histrionic displays, gestures and emotional oratory. Religious turmoil swept throughout New England and the middle colonies as ministers left established churches to preach the revival.

Among those influenced by Whitefield was Edwards, and the Great Awakening reached its culmination in 1741 with his sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Edwards did not engage in theatrics, but delivered his sermons in a quiet, thoughtful manner. He stressed that the established churches sought to deprive Christianity of its emotional content. His magnum opus, Of Freedom of Will (1754), attempted to reconcile Calvinism with the Enlightenment.

The Great Awakening gave rise to evangelical denominations and the spirit of revivalism, which continue to play significant roles in American religious and cultural life. It weakened the status of the established clergy and provoked believers to rely on their own conscience. Perhaps most important, it led to the proliferation of sects and denominations, which in turn encouraged general acceptance of the principle of religious toleration.

EMERGENCE OF COLONIAL GOVERNMENT

In all phases of colonial development, a striking feature was the lack of controlling influence by the English government. All colonies except Georgia emerged as companies of shareholders, or as feudal proprietorships stemming from charters granted by the Crown. The fact that the king had transferred his immediate sovereignty over the New World settlements to stock companies and proprietors did not, of course, mean that the colonists in America were necessarily free of outside control. Under the terms of the Virginia Company charter, for example, full governmental authority was vested in the company itself. Nevertheless, the crown expected that the company would be resident in England. Inhabitants of Virginia, then, would have no more voice in their government than if the king himself had retained absolute rule.

For their part, the colonies had never thought of themselves as subservient. Rather, they considered themselves chiefly as commonwealths or states, much like England itself, having only a loose association with the authorities in London. In one way or another, exclusive rule from the outside withered away. The colonists -- inheritors of the traditions of the Englishman's long struggle for political liberty -- incorporated concepts of freedom into Virginia's first charter. It provided that English colonists were to exercise all liberties, franchises and immunities "as if they had been abiding and born within this our Realm of England." They were, then, to enjoy the benefits of the Magna Carta and the common law. In 1618 the Virginia Company issued instructions to its appointed governor providing that free inhabitants of the plantations should elect representatives to join with the governor and an appointive council in passing ordinances for the welfare of the colony.

These measures proved to be some of the most far-reaching in the entire colonial period. From then on, it was generally accepted that the colonists had a right to participate in their own government. In most instances, the king, in making future grants, provided in the charter that the free men of the colony should have a voice in legislation affecting them. Thus, charters awarded to the Calverts in Maryland, William Penn in Pennsylvania, the proprietors in North and South Carolina and the proprietors in New Jersey specified that legislation should be enacted with "the consent of the freemen."

In New England, for many years, there was even more complete self-government than in the other colonies. Aboard the Mayflower, the Pilgrims adopted an instrument for government called the "Mayflower Compact," to "combine ourselves together into a civil body politic for our better ordering and preservation...and by virtue hereof [to] enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices...as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony...."

Although there was no legal basis for the Pilgrims to establish a system of self-government, the action was not contested and, under the compact, the Plymouth settlers were able for many years to conduct their own affairs without outside interference.

A similar situation developed in the Massachusetts Bay Company, which had been given the right to govern itself. Thus, full authority rested in the hands of persons residing in the colony. At first, the dozen or so original members of the company who had come to America attempted to rule autocratically. But the other colonists soon demanded a voice in public affairs and indicated that refusal would lead to a mass migration.

Faced with this threat, the company members yielded, and control of the government passed to elected representatives. Subsequently, other New England colonies -- such as Connecticut and Rhode Island -- also succeeded in becoming self-governing simply by asserting that they were beyond any governmental authority, and then setting up their own political system modeled after that of the Pilgrims at Plymouth.

In only two cases was the self-government provision omitted. These were New York, which was granted to Charles II's brother, the Duke of York (later to become King James II); and Georgia, which was granted to a group of "trustees." In both instances the provisions for governance were short-lived, for the colonists demanded legislative representation so insistently that the authorities soon yielded.

Eventually most colonies became royal colonies, but in the mid-17th century, the English were too distracted by the Civil War (1642-1649) and Oliver Cromwell's Puritan Commonwealth and Protectorate to pursue an effective colonial policy. After the restoration of Charles II and the Stuart dynasty in 1660, England had more opportunity to attend to colonial administration. Even then, however, it was inefficient and lacked a coherent plan, and the colonies were left largely to their own devices.

The remoteness afforded by a vast ocean also made control of the colonies difficult. Added to this was the character of life itself in early America. From countries limited in space and dotted with populous towns, the settlers had come to a land of seemingly unending reach. On such a continent, natural conditions promoted a tough individualism, as people became used to making their own decisions. Government penetrated the back country only slowly, and conditions of anarchy often prevailed on the frontier.

Yet, the assumption of self-government in the colonies did not go entirely unchallenged. In the 1670s, the Lords of Trade and Plantations, a royal committee established to enforce the mercantile system on the colonies, moved to annul the Massachusetts Bay charter, because the colony was resisting the government's economic policy. James II in 1685 approved a proposal to create a Dominion of New England and place colonies south through New Jersey under its jurisdiction, thereby tightening the Crown's control over the whole region. A royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros, levied taxes by executive order, implemented a number of other harsh measures and jailed those who resisted.

When news of the Glorious Revolution (1688-1689) that deposed James II reached Boston, the population rebelled and imprisoned Andros. Under a new charter, Massachusetts and Plymouth were united for the first time in 1691 as the royal colony of Massachusetts Bay. The other colonies that had come under the Dominion of New England quickly reinstalled their previous governments.

The Glorious Revolution had other positive effects on the colonies. The Bill of Rights and Toleration Act of 1689 affirmed freedom of worship for Christians and enforced limits on the Crown. Equally important, John Locke's Second Treatise on Government (1690) set forth a theory of government based not on divine right but on contract, and contended that the people, endowed with natural rights of life, liberty and property, had the right to rebel when governments violated these natural rights.

Colonial politics in the early 18th century resembled English politics in the 17th. The Glorious Revolution affirmed the supremacy of Parliament, but colonial governors sought to exercise powers in the colonies that the king had lost in England. The colonial assemblies, aware of events in England, attempted to assert their "rights" and "liberties." By the early 18th century, the colonial legislatures held two significant powers similar to those held by the English Parliament: the right to vote on taxes and expenditures, and the right to initiate legislation rather than merely act on proposals of the governor.

The legislatures used these rights to check the power of royal governors and to pass other measures to expand their power and influence. The recurring clashes between governor and assembly worked increasingly to awaken the colonists to the divergence between American and English interests. In many cases, the royal authorities did not understand the importance of what the colonial assemblies were doing and simply neglected them. However, these acts established precedents and principles and eventually became part of the "constitution" of the colonies.

In this way, the colonial legislatures established the right of self- government. In time, the center of colonial administration shifted from London to the provincial capitals.

THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

France and Britain engaged in a succession of wars in Europe and the Caribbean at several intervals in the 18th century. Though Britain secured certain advantages from them -- primarily in the sugar-rich islands of the Caribbean -- the struggles were generally indecisive, and France remained in a powerful position in North America at the beginning of the Seven Years War in 1754.

By that time France had established a strong relationship with a number of Indian tribes in Canada and along the Great Lakes, taken possession of the Mississippi River and, by establishing a line of forts and trading posts, marked out a great crescent-shaped empire stretching from Quebec to New Orleans. Thus, the British were confined to the narrow belt east of the Appalachian Mountains. The French threatened not only the British Empire but the American colonists themselves, for in holding the Mississippi Valley, France could limit their westward expansion.

An armed clash took place in 1754 at Fort Duquesne, the site where Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is now located, between a band of French regulars and Virginia militiamen under the command of 22-year-old George Washington, a Virginia planter and surveyor.

In London, the Board of Trade attempted to deal with the conflict by calling a meeting of representatives from New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and the New England colonies. From June 19 to July 10, the Albany Congress, as it came to be known, met with the Iroquois at Albany, New York, in order to improve relations with them and secure their loyalty to the British.

The delegates also declared a union of the American colonies "absolutely necessary for their preservation," and adopted the Albany Plan of Union. Drafted by Benjamin Franklin, the plan provided that a president appointed by the king act with a grand council of delegates chosen by the assemblies, with each colony to be represented in proportion to its financial contributions to the general treasury. This organ would have charge of defense, Indian relations, and trade and settlement of the west, as well as having the power to levy taxes. But none of the colonies accepted Franklin's plan, for none wished to surrender either the power of taxation or control over the development of the western lands to a central authority.

England's superior strategic position and her competent leadership ultimately brought victory in the Seven Years' War, only a modest portion of which was fought in the Western Hemisphere.

In the Peace of Paris, signed in 1763, France relinquished all of Canada, the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi Valley to the British. The dream of a French empire in North America was over. Having triumphed over France, Britain was now compelled to face a problem that it had hitherto neglected -- the governance of its empire. It was essential that London organize its now vast possessions to facilitate defense, reconcile the divergent interests of different areas and peoples, and distribute more evenly the cost of imperial administration.

In North America alone, British territories had more than doubled. To the narrow strip along the Atlantic coast had been added the vast expanse of Canada and the territory between the Mississippi River and the Allegheny Mountains, an empire in itself. A population that had been predominantly Protestant and English now included French-speaking Catholics from Quebec, and large numbers of partly Christianized Indians. Defense and administration of the new territories, as well as of the old, would require huge sums of money and increased personnel. The old colonial system was obviously inadequate to these tasks.

SIDEBAR: THE WITCHES OF SALEM

In 1692 a group of adolescent girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, became subject to strange fits after hearing tales told by a West Indian slave. When they were questioned, they accused several women of being witches who were tormenting them. The townspeople were appalled but not surprised: belief in witchcraft was widespread throughout 17th-century America and Europe.

What happened next -- although an isolated event in American history -- provides a vivid window into the social and psychological world of Puritan New England. Town officials convened a court to hear the charges of witchcraft, and swiftly convicted and executed a tavernkeeper, Bridget Bishop. Within a month, five other women had been convicted and hanged.

Nevertheless, the hysteria grew, in large measure because the court permitted witnesses to testify that they had seen the accused as spirits or in visions. By its very nature, such "spectral evidence" was especially dangerous, because it could be neither verified nor subject to objective examination. By the fall of 1692, more than 20 victims, including several men, had been executed, and more than 100 others were in jail -- among them some of the town's most prominent citizens. But now the hysteria threatened to spread beyond Salem, and ministers throughout the colony called for an end to the trials. The governor of the colony agreed and dismissed the court. Those still in jail were later acquitted or given reprieves.

The Salem witch trials have long fascinated Americans. On a psychological level, most historians agree that Salem Village in 1692 was seized by a kind of public hysteria, fueled by a genuine belief in the existence of witchcraft. They point out that, while some of the girls may have been acting, many responsible adults became caught up in the frenzy as well.

But even more revealing is a closer analysis of the identities of the accused and the accusers. Salem Village, like much of colonial New England at that time, was undergoing an economic and political transition from a largely agrarian, Puritan-dominated community to a more commercial, secular society. Many of the accusers were representatives of a traditional way of life tied to farming and the church, whereas a number of the accused witches were members of the rising commercial class of small shopkeepers and tradesmen. Salem's obscure struggle for social and political power between older traditional groups and a newer commercial class was one repeated in communities throughout American history . But it took a bizarre and deadly detour when its citizens were swept up by the conviction that the devil was loose in their homes.

The Salem witch trials also serve as a dramatic parable of the deadly consequences of making sensational, but false, charges. Indeed, a frequent term in political debate for making false accusations against a large number of people is "witch hunt."
